Social Media

1. What kind of social media platforms do you use?

Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube and WhatsApp.

2. How much do you think you use each platform in a day?

Instagram: 40 minutes

Snapchat: 5 minutes

YouTube: 15 minutes

WhatsApp: 20 minutes

3. What do you think of social media and media literacy?

As we all know, social media has a really big influence on our lives. We share, like, hashtag, post and chat on social media platforms. Over the past 20 years, social media has become more and more important to us and some people are even addicted to it. You can not deny it. Social media has become a part of our lives, a big part. Everything has advantages and disadvantages and so does social media. Social media can be a very easy way to communicate with people all over the world or to show your achievements. Unfortunately, social media also has a lot of disadvantages, for example, people can get very insecure by seeing all those perfect body's on Instagram. They think they are not good enough. Not only that but also many people, mostly teenagers, are getting cyber bullied online through social media. The reason for that is because of jealousy, revenge or simply because teenagers are bored. Also, because social media has such a big influence on our lives, we do not talk to each other or go outside as much as people used to do before social media became such a huge thing. In my life, social media does not play a really big role, but it definitely has an influence on my life.

Social Media Artist

http://jiyeonkim.de/albums/tinder-project-1/

Ji Yeon Kim is an artist who used random people's Tinder profile pictures in an exhibition. She drew 100 profile pictures from Tinder in total. She drew men and women, who are all different. In my view, using people's pictures without their permission is an invasion of privacy. I would certainly not be happy when one of my pictures was used in some exhibition to criticize the dating app Tinder, in particular. There are many people that have the same view on this. I think that people's privacy should be respected more and that their pictures may only be used when they have given permission for it, which these people have not. Ji Yeon Kim has used the pictures without approval. Therefore I am against this type of public art.

Social Media Addiction (Research)

Made with Carmel Roelofsen

Social media addiction?

Social media has become more and more popular, it influences us and is a big part of our lives. Some people are even addicted to it and can’t stop using social media. When do you cross the line of using social media a lot and being addicted to it? This is an interesting question that probably everyone has ever asked him or herself. In this project, we are going to explain what it means to be addicted to social media, when you are addicted and what the results are of being addicted to social media.

What does addicted to social media mean? And when are you Addicted?

Addiction usually refers to compulsive behaviour that leads to negative effects. When you are addicted to something you want to do that all the time. A social media addict could be considered someone with an obsession or compulsion to use social media. Someone who constantly checks his social network platforms. This can even lead to people who stalk others through social media. It is difficult to say when someone crosses the line of using social media a lot and being addicted, because there is not a clear border. Therefore the problem is that people keep thinking they are not addicted and they don’t do something about it, while in fact, they are.

Social media facts

  • Investigators at a University in Chicago did research about social media addiction.  They concluded that social media addiction can be stronger than addiction to cigarettes and alcohol. They also did an experiment with this topic in which they recorded the cravings of several hundred people for several weeks.

  • There is estimated that 210 million people suffer from the internet and social media addictions. Internet and social media addictions continue to grow as our dependence on technology increases.

  • 71% of American people sleep with or next to their phones. This is because of social media addiction. This addiction doesn’t only affect your behaviour during the day, but it also damages people’s ability to sleep. From this research is concluded that people who sleep with their phone next to him or her don’t get enough sleep.

  • 10% of teens check their phones more than 10 times per night. The exposure to screens is bad for your ability to sleep, but social media addictions are making it even harder for people to get a good night of sleep. 45% of the people check social media instead of sleeping.

Social Media usage

The last year's social media usage increased really fast. Almost everyone in the US uses social media and also a lot of people in the Netherlands use it. For some people, social media is there work, like social influencers, and some people use it for fun. As we all know, social media is becoming a bigger part of our lives.

Social Media Project (Brainstorm)

Made with Carmel Roelofsen

Social media project

With this project, we want to persuade people that a social media addiction is dreadful. We want to create an image to people of what social media addiction is and how it works. We started looking and searching for art which had to do with social media addiction to find inspiration for this project. For this project, we want to do something with the fact that when you are addicted to social media, your phone is always with you and it becomes a part of you. We were also thinking about the fact that social media is an online drug and that social media is more addictive than cigarettes or drugs. We also wanted to do something with the social media symbols/icons, because that is what pops up in everyone’s head when they think about social media. Below you can see the research we did on social media addiction with art.

In this sketch, you can see multiple injections with social media in them. That is to image the social media addiction that can be stronger than cigarettes or drugs. The phone that sticks on the hand pictures the fact that when you are addicted to social media your phone becomes a part of you.

Painting Project

We also want to make a painting in the style of Andy Warhol, but then with social media icons. We want to do this because it looks cool and social media has a lot of different sides.

Photography Project

For our photography assignment, we want to edit the photos and add social media symbols such as likes and comments. We are going to do this, because social media is becoming a big part of our lives and influences what we do and think.
